How long does an employment-based I-485 take?

For August 2026, USCIS reports that 80% of employment-based adjustment applications handled by service centers were completed within 42.5 months; for cases handled by field offices, 9.5 months. An I-485 can only be approved once your priority date is current under the Final Action Dates chart, so the Visa Bulletin often matters more than processing time.

Why is the service center time so much longer than the field office time?

They are different pools of cases. USCIS publishes them separately and they should not be averaged. Many employment-based cases wait at the service center until a visa number is available, which lengthens the service center figure.

How long does a family-based I-485 take?

Family-based adjustment applications are handled by the field office for your address. For August 2026 the published times range from 8.5 months (Burlington VT) to 36 months (Seattle WA), with a middle value of 16 months across 90 offices.

Can I choose a faster field office?

No. The field office is determined by where you live. Moving just to change offices is generally not practical, and a change of address can itself trigger a case transfer.
